چکیده

Cox proportional hazards model is a widely used method to analyse time-to-event data for survival analysis. In the medical field, age is the most common confounder of any association between risk factor and disease since most risk factors and the risk of disease change with age. Usually, age recorded at the start of the study (age-at-baseline) will be adjusted for in the model to account for the effect of age on risk, but the effect of 'acquired' age during the study (age-atrisk) may be more appropriate because it is age-at-risk that determines current risk rather than the age when the risk factor was measured or determined. Lexis expansion is a method that can facilitate the adjustment of age-at-risk by expanding the observation of each individual into several observations of different age-at-risk bands; age-at-risk can then be adjusted using Cox proportional hazards model. In this paper, Lexis expansion will be explained with examples as well as the implementation of the Cox model using the expanded data.

Lexis Expansion: a prerequisite for analyzing time changing variables in a cohort study

In a prospective analytical cohort study or a study involving a longer follow up, changing age of participants influence the relationship between exposure and outcome. Usually age at entry is incorporated in the regression model to adjust for age. However, this fails to fully explain and adjust for changing age. For this Lexis expansion, a concept by Wilhelm Lexis, allows the analyst to expand ...

مقایسه پارامترها و برازش مدل‌های با متغیرهای مستقل وابسته و غیر وابسته به زمان در تحلیل بقا

Background & Objectives : Management of time-dependent variables is the advantages of survival analysis. This study compares time-dependent and -independent variables in survival analysis in culling of dairy cows.   Methods: In this historical cohort, 7067 dairy cows in the Province of Tehran were recruited. Cows were followed to the next calving or culling. Data on the occurrence of healt...

Survival analysis of thalassemia major patients using Cox, Gompertz proportional hazard and Weibull accelerated failure time models

Background: Thalassemia major (TM) is a severe disease and the most common anemia worldwide. The survival time of the disease and its risk factors are of importance for physicians. The present study was conducted to apply the semi-parametric Cox PH model and use parametric proportional hazards (PH) and accelerated failure time (AFT) models to identify the risk factors related to survival of TM ...

Sampling Bias in Survival Analysis How to Use the Lexis Diagram

In survival analysis, the data are often not analysed in the life time distribution. Because of the way individuals are selected for the study, the observed data must be analysed in a modiied version of the lifetime distribution. We can use information on survival to the start of the study when we assume that the process of birthtimes is Poisson. In this case the relevant modiications are lengt...

Mucinous and Non-Mucinous Adenocarcinoma in Colorectal Cancer Patients

Background: The oncologic behavior of mucinous adenocarcinoma (MA) of colorectal differs from non-mucinous adenocarcinoma (NMA). MA is more advanced at diagnosis and has a poorer prognosis than NMA. We aimed to evaluate prognostic factors and survival rate in patients with MA compared with NMA in Western Iran. Methods: During 2008-2015 in a retrospective study, 83 patients with CRC referred to...
